What you will need – Paper, Pen, Metal Tape Measure

There are two choices when it comes to installing your new Roller Blinds – you can fit them on the inside or outside of the window frame. Inside the frame, or Recess fit, is great for space optimisation, cleanliness and is the standard method. Outside the frame, or Face Fit, is perfect if you have window obstacles to avoid or if you want minimise any light that might creep in.

In the recess:

  • Measure from left wall to right wall inside the frame at the top, middle and bottom of your window frame. The smallest measurement is your width.
  • Measure from top to bottom on the left, middle and right of your window frame. The smallest measurement is your height.
  • Always use a metal tape measure for maximum efficiency.
  • If fitting on the recess we recommend your blind be under roll to fit in comfortably.
  • Remember: It is always better to measure a few millimetres too short than too big!
  • Don’t take any deductions – we can do that for you!

On the face:

  • If fitting to an architrave, measure from the end of the left architrave to the end of the right architrave at the top of the window. This is your width. Measure from the top of the architrave to the bottom of the architrave on the left, middle and right hand sides. The largest measurement is your drop.
  • If fitting without an architrave, measure the width of the area you would like the blind to overlap. We recommend overlapping the edge of the window by 50mm on both sides. Measure the height of the area you would like to overlap. We recommend overlapping the top of the window by 70mm.
  • Always use a metal tape measure for maximum efficiency.
  • There will be no deductions taken for a face fit.

Firstly, you need to check that your recess is pretty much square, making it suitable for our shutters. All you need to do is measure the recess diagonally from corner to corner on both sides. Then, compare the two measurements.

If the difference is 12mm or less, that’s great you’re ready. If they vary by any more than that, then, unfortunately, you won’t be able to fit shutters in your recess. If this happens, we have plenty more blinds  to choose from across our sites. Or another option is we can offer a measuring and fit service. (Available in most areas)

Ready to measure?

Have you decided where your shutters are going to sit? This can be at the front of the recess or outside the recess. Either way, measure at the place you plan to fit your shutters. You do not need to make deductions we will do that for you

Recess fitting

For a recess fitting, you need to measure at the front of the recess. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom.
Next measure the drop on the right, in the centre and on the left. Write down the smallest measurements, these are the sizes you will use to place an order.

Face fitting

For a face fitting, you need to measure at the front of the recess as you would with a front of recess fitting. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom.
Next measure the drop on the right, in the centre and on the left. Write down the smallest measurements.

Next, add 84mm to the width. This is the measurement you will enter.

Then, if you do not have a protruding windowsill, add 84mm to the drop. This will allow you to fit your frame evenly around all four sides of the recess.

If, however, your windowsill protrudes take the measurement for the drop and add only 42mm. This way the frame will run evenly around 3 sides of your recess and along the top of your windowsill.

Measuring for a mid rail

For shutters over 1400mm we put in a midrail this will give your shutters that extra support. Our experts tend to position their midrails at the same height as any transom bars on their window.
A few  restrictions when customising your midrail. For structural reasons they must be a minimum of 380mm and a maximum of 1300mm from both the top and bottom of your shutter panel.
To position your midrail, simply measure from the bottom of your recess to the midpoint of where you want it to sit. If this is level with your transom bar, measure from the bottom of the recess to the centre of the bar.

Measuring for your new Barcelona awning couldn’t be easier. Check the span of your outdoor area to see if you have room for the length of the 3.5m, 4.5m or 5.5m awning. Remember that all awnings open to a span of 3m, however, you can set the limit to less than that if necessary.

When measuring for installation into brick, you will need at least 5 bricks above where the awning will be installed for structural support.

If installing into eaves or roof, make sure you are aware of the structural support on the inside, and consider the need for rafter brackets for additional support. Rafter brackets are fitted onto the roof rafters and require a cut-out in the structure to feed through the roof  fascia before being secured to the timber rafter.

There are two choices when it comes to installing your new venetians – you can fit them on the inside (reveal fit) or outside (face fit) of the window frame.

  • Make sure you have 68mm between the edge of the window frame and the window – this is to allow for the headbox to fit in the recess.
  • Remember: It is always better to measure a few millimeters shorter rather than making your blind bigger than the window!
